Objectives, Aims and Operational description

Objectives

  1. To promote the study of tropical bryophytes.
  2. To support bryologists working in the tropics.
  3. To provide the necessary expertise to support the aims.
  4. To encourage the conservation of tropical bryophytes and their habitats.

Aims

  1. To research the bryophyte flora of the tropics, particularly sub-Saharan Africa, by:
    • taxonomic and ecological studies
    • recording bryophyte distribution data
    • making surveys.
  2. To produce documents supporting the objectives, in particular:
    • a generic bryophyte flora of sub-Saharan Africa
    • in the longer term, a flora at species level.
  3. To provide bryological training courses in Africa to local botanists.

Operational description

  1. TBR is an ad hoc association of bryologists with expertise in the tropics, coordinated by Brian O'Shea (specialising in mosses and project management) and Martin Wigginton (specialising in hepatics and project finance), who will call on additional appropriate expertise when required.
  2. Funding for specific projects will be sought by the coordinators as necessary.
  3. TBR will hold no assets.
