No. 92: 125-164 (Aug. 2002) Checklist of the mosses of sri lanka Brian J. O'Shea Abstract. A checklist of the mosses of Sri Lanka is provided, containing 560 mosses together with 637 locally used synonyms. All distribution data and synonyms are supported by literature references, 189 in total. Two new combinations are made: Eriopus lucidus Thwaites & Mitt. in Mitt. becomes Calyptrochaeta lucida (Thwaites & Mitt.) O'Shea, and Ectropothecium subretusum Thwaites & Mitt in Mitt. becomes Taxiphyllum subretusum (Thwaites & Mitt.) O'Shea. Introduction The last checklist for Sri Lankan mosses was published by Abeywickrama & Jensen in 1978 [2]. This was an aggregation of all taxa thought to occur on the island based on available literature. Not much collecting has taken place since that time (or at least, little has been published), but a great deal of work has been done on the taxonomy of tropical Asian mosses, and so although the number of taxa has only slightly decreased (from 575 to 560), there has been a great deal of change to the 1978 list, particular in the names of plants and the identifications of synonyms (now 637 in total). Although there are often quite a large number of references for a taxon in the checklist, it is usually the case that several of these refer to the same Thwaites or Gardner collection. For this reason it was hoped that this could be a collections-based list, but although this would have eliminated many of the duplicate references, it proved to be an unrealistic task. There are large numbers of collections held in European herbaria, many of which are not published, and also in Peradeniya Herbarium in Sri Lanka, and the project seemed more suitable for a database than a checklist. The list has thus remained literature-based, with the hope that local bryologists will be able to complete the task - although it is understood that at present there are no active bryologists in Sri Lanka. Conventions used in the checklist * All accepted taxa are left-aligned, and comments and synonyms are slightly inset, in a smaller font. For accepted taxa, following the authority name are a series of numbers in square brackets, which refer to the literature list in the 'References' section. *Authorities of taxa have been changed where necessary to agree with Index Muscorum [169] (or later corrections) and for author abbreviations to conform to Brummitt & Powell (1992) [15]. * The references include all those referring to Sri Lanka collections or to the distribution of taxa occurring in Sri Lanka or to taxonomy affecting Sri Lankan taxa. *To save the addition of further references to the list, Index Muscorum has been given as the source of many early synonyms. *Particularly during the mid-Nineteenth century, it was conventional to write the sub-generic division (if any) in brackets after the genus name, thus: Hypnum (Tamariscella) glaucinum, for what we now know as Thuidium glaucinum or Neckera (Papillaria) semitorta for Papillaria semitorta. Although these subgenera sometimes became genera, often they did not. They have been omitted in the list of synonyms. *Only synonyms used in relation to Sri Lanka have been included. New combinations Calyptrochaeta lucida (Thwaites & Mitt.) O'Shea, comb. nov. Basionym: Eriopus lucidus Thwaites & Mitt. in Mitt., J. Linn. Soc. Bot. 13: 311. 1873. Type: Sri Lanka. Thwaites 154 (BM, bm000662676, bm000662677, bm000662674, bm000662675 - isotypes) (Holotype NY, not seen). Eriopus Brid. (1827) shares the same type specimen as Calyptrochaeta Desvaux (1825) and being of a later date is thus an invalid genus [92a]. The four BM isotypes of Thwaites 154 are all identical and agree well with the type description, so it was not considered necessary to confirm this name change also by seeing the NY holotype. As the collection is clearly a Calyptrochaeta it seemed sensible to make the new combination, although the new name is not meant to suggest that it is taxonomically distinct from other Asian members of the genus; that decision must await the necessary taxonomic revision. Taxiphyllum subretusum (Thwaites & Mitt.) O'Shea, comb. nov. Basionym: Ectropothecium subretusum Thwaites & Mitt in Mitt., J. Linn. Soc. Bot. 13: 321. 1873 (( Taxithelium subretusum (Thwaites & Mitt.) Broth., Nat. Pfl. 1(3): 1093. 1908; Glossadelphus subretusus (Thwaites & Mitt.) M.Fleisch, Musci Fl. Buitenzorg 4: 1352. 1923) Type: Sri Lanka. Central Province. Amhagamora, 3000 ft., Thwaites 246 (BM, bm000662671, bm000662672, bm000662673 - isotypes) (Holotype NY, not seen) The genus Glossadelphus has been shown to be a synonym of Phyllodon (Buck 1987a [18]) and taxa still within the genus need to be transferred to other genera. This taxon falls within the scope of Taxiphyllum. The generic boundaries of Taxiphyllum are still uncertain, and this species exhibits prorae which are much more prominent than have been reported previously in this genus, although other characters, particularly the pointed laminal cells, confirm the placement. Further research in this area is needed. Checklist Acanthocladium ceylonense Broth. & Dixon in Dixon = Wijkia ceylonensis [29] Acrocryphaea concavifolia (Griff.) [2, 14] The presence of this species in Sri Lanka was indicated only by a reference in Brotherus (1924: 314) [11] and was repeated by Brhl [14] and Abeywickrama & Jansen. Racomitrium canescens is a northern taxon and is unlikely to occur in Sri Lanka, although related taxa do occur in Asia (Ochyra, pers. comm.). Racomitrium crispulum (Hook.f. & Wilson) Hook.f. & Wilson. - This is a sub-antarctic endemic, but in 1955, H.T. Clifford [26] caused great confusion by expanding the concept of R. crispulum to include collections from Australasia, SE Asia and Central and S. America, and this concept was perpetuated after being adopted by Index Muscorum [169]. As a result, R. javanicum was subsequently treated in our area as a synonym of R. crispulum, rather than R. subsecundum. The excellent treatment of the R. subsecundum group by Frisvoll [67] is followed here, and all Sri Lankan records have been transferred to R. subsecundum. Thanks to R. However, because of a confusion over the identity of the type specimen, the name T. glaucinoides was also used for what is now called T. pristocalyx var.pristocalyx, and so the record has been transfered to that taxon.
